I am Canadian.I started learning French when I was 10 years old. But my whole experience with the language was in the classroom. All of that changed, however, during my last summer of high school. As a 17-year-old girl, I flew across the country by myself for the first time! I headed for Quebec to live in the province with a French-speaking host family, who didn't speak any English. And IwouldlearnFrench at alocal school.
On the first day of school, all of us students were given a test to determine(測定)our language level. We were required to speak only French all summer.
I made every effort to communicate in a second language by making new friends, seeing movies and even ordering food from restaurants in French.Though I couldn't understand most of it at the very beginning, the whole experience was exciting and refreshing.
On weekends,my classmates and I took trips to different places around the province. On one trip,we went whale watching on the St. Lawrence River. Even though it was raining, we could see huge whales swimming around our boat. The most memorable part of our trip was a visit to historic Quebec City. I walked along the stone streets, took pictures of the European-style(歐式的)buildings,and learned some stories there.
Finally my efforts paid off! At the end of the summer, I was able to communicate prettywell.I couldn't wait togoback to school and talk with my French teacher.Being fully immersed(沉浸)in a French-speaking environment was a valuable learning experience. And it could be the main reason for my improvement in French.
41. When did the writer fly alone for the first time?
12.How did the local school determine the students’language level?
13. Did the writer enjoy the experience of communicating in French?
44.What did the writer think of the visit to historic Quebec City?

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard(果園) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production(產(chǎn)量)level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals(灌溉 渠)and other projects began to be built in my village.“Who are they?" I asked. “They are good men from our government,”" my grandma replied.
Shortly afterwards, I moved to another city for my junior high school. One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canal ran past every orchard, so villagers didn't have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project(水利工程)was completed,a policy(政策)was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.
Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside. Nowadays, people work hard to live in a big city. However,we should not forget our hometowns where we are from.

I used tohate my mother because sheworked a lot and didn't spend much time with me. Then one Friday morning I took part in a three-day self-help program for teenagers. Whether you believe it or not, that weekend changed my life.
About 100 other teenagers were there. During the first two days I met a lot of great people. I was glad because I made so many friends there.
On Sunday, the leader did an interesting exercise called “Chocolate or Toys".He asked a girl which she liked better, chocolate or toys. She chose chocolate. Then he asked her to choose again between chocolate and chocolate.Of course, she didn't have a choice.
This exercise told us that sometimes we don't have a choice in life, and that sometimes we have to accept something, rather than complaining(抱怨).
A girl stoodup and started talkingabout her mom whowas a drug addict and how much shehated her mother.
"I want a new mom." she cried.
" Unfortunately, you can't have one ,” the leader replied. “You have to accept the mother that you have."

During the years people change a lot. Five years is enough to compare yourself now and then. I think that I have changed a lot in the past five years.
Firstly, there are changes in my thoughts. Five years ago my thoughts were the same as a child's. I believed that the world was a place without problems.I thought that I could always have time for games and friends wouldn't change. Also, I was sure that if I had any problems , my parents could always be around me offering help. Now I still believe that the world is a great place to live in, but sometimes there are different problems you have to face. And at times you have to deal with these problems alone without any help. And that is one of the changes that have happened to me in the past five years. Now I'm much more responsible(負(fù)責(zé)任的)and serious than five years ago.
Secondly, there are some changes in my interests. Now I spend less time with friends and I spend most of my time studying for exams. Five years ago,it wasn’t so. I believed that there was nothing more important than playing football or watching cartoonmovies during those days.
Although I have changed in some ways, there are some similar ways between now and then. For example, I still like spending time with friends. And I am still sure that childhood is the best time in our life.
